Grass is what is usually talked about when people talke about temperate grasslands, hence the name grasslands. Grass is able to survive because of a few reasons. It has learned to adpat to cold winters, hot summers, and drying winds. Since lack of water is aparent in every temperate grassland, plants have come up with ways to conserve water. One way they do this is by having thin, needle-like shaped leaves that expose only a little part of the plant to the sun. Also, approximately 70% of the plant is under the ground, avoiding the wind and sun. Some grasses even slow down their respiratory rate so less water is lost to the sun. Grass is important to temperate grasslands because it is a food source for many of its inhabitants. Without grass, many of the animals living there would die because they would have nothing to eat, the animals that eat those animals would die, also from lack of food, and so on and so forth.
Is there a plant as important as grass is in a temperate grassland in your biome?
